Punxsutawney Groundhog Club - Paving
We had to go through every step like every other borrower does. It’s smooth, it’s easy, the contact is phenomenal.
People
The seer of seers and the only true weather prognosticating groundhog draws a stream of wedding parties, baby showers, veterans groups, tour buses, traveling families and solo fans. That means a lot of traffic to Punxsutawney Phil’s Groundhog Zoo, Hogspitality Pavilion and Gobbler’s Knob Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop. But especially in winter weather, the unpaved roads and parking lot became “an eyesore that needed to be fixed,” said Jay Lundy, a member of Phil’s Inner Circle.
Progress
The club previously borrowed from The Progress Fund to develop Phil’s zoo. When it came time to finance paving, “with the prior experience we had at The Progress Fund, it was an easy call to make,” says Jay. The Progress Fund loaned $55,000.
Impact
Punxsutawney, Jefferson County and the entire region benefit from Phil’s fans and their dollars. “Groundhog Day has turned into a real tourism-generating event throughout the year,” says Jay. Now the experience is more inviting and accessible to everyone. Maintenance is simpler, too, and the next time it snows on Feb. 2, it’ll be a lot easier to plow the roads and lot. Jay adds: “It makes for better photos, which matters!”
